Top 10 TV Shows of 2014

Honorable Mentions: Louie, House of Cards, Orange is the New Black, Halt and Catch Fire, Person of Interest.
Dishonorable Mentions: Any show from The CW

10. Silicon Valley
I'll pick these guys over sheldon and leonard any day.
HBO's new comedy about a group of young men who founded a tech start-up company in Silicon Valley is a way superior show than The Big Bang Theory, the show shines through it's ensemble cast, from the banters of Dinesh and Gilfoyle, the motivational speeches of Erlich Bachman, it manages to be a fresh take on the super nerd tech comedy genre. Stop watching that tired awful big bang theory show and start watching Silicon Valley.

9. Bojack Horseman
Bojack Horseman surprisingly becomes dark in the latter half of the season.
Will Arnett voices an anthropomorphic horse who rose to fame with his sitcom "Horsin Around", after his sitcom ended he is now a washed up, alcoholic, self loathing actor and now must deal with his declining popularity. At first glance you might compare Bojack Horseman to `shows like american dad or family guy with it's rapid fast delivery of jokes and at first, it's portrayal of Bojack being a one dimensional unlikable, arrogant main character, but as the series progress we eventually see Bojack transform into complex character, capable of displaying genuine emotion and a character that you can actually root for, and then add top notch performances from Aaron Paul, Amy Sedaris and Alison Brie makes Bojack Horseman one the years best new animated series.

8. True Detective
True Detective will have a new cast and story for the next season.
Thank you American Horror Story for popularizing the "Anthology" format, now we only get to see Marty Hart and Ruste Cohle for one season. True Detective will have a brand new cast and story next season, which makes me wonder if it can live up to the first season. Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson play two homicide detectives who are tracking down a serial killer who preys on children. Season 1 will be remembered by it's intense and dark atmosphere, a six minute intense tracking shot , and McConaughey's performance as Ruste Cohle. Here's hoping that Vince Vaughn and Colin Farrell can out act Woody and Matthew next season.

7. Rick And Morty
"What about the reality where hitler cured cancer morty? the answer is dont think about it."
I don't know how to describe Rick and Morty, the show is equal parts Crazy, Intelligent and Funny.Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon's animated comedy about an alcoholic, bitter, crazy scientist Rick Sanchez and his grand son Morty Smith manages to be dark, crazy but at the same time genuine. Killer episodes like "Rixty Minutes", "Meeseeks and Destroy""Close Rick-Counters of the Rick Kind" and "Rick Potion #9" manages to cement Rick and Morty's place as one of the best shows of the year.

6. Homeland
I still believe that brody is alive.
Everyone was counting Homeland out after that ho hum third season. But the show returns with a bang this year and reminded us that Homeland can still provide thrills, suspense and shock. Even though the season is still not over, it is shaping up to be one of the year's best. And i still believe that Brody is still alive. Brody! i still believe!

5. Fargo
"Yes or No"
Another show that will have new cast members and storyline next season, Fargo manages to surpass it's source material, the original movie. I think I've been more attached to Deputy Molly Solverson than Chief Marge Gunderson, i hated Lester Nygaard more than Jerry Lundegaard, Fargo manages to make you care for the good main characters and make you truly despise the antagonists. There's a nice easter egg too for the movie fans as the first season features the buried ransom money from the film in a minor subplot.

4. Rectify

Daniel and Amantha will return for a third season.

Good news: Daniel Holden's story about re-entering society after being on death row for  most of his adult life continues to be mystifying and riveting, season 2 answered some questions but ultimately provided more mystery for Daniel, he continues to be one of the most complex and mysterious characters on TV, also Rectify got renewed for a third season. Bad news: The third season is rumored to only consist  of 6 episodes.

3. You're The Worst
Pictured: Not Ross and Rachel
"A modern look at love and happiness told through the eyes of two people who haven't been very successful with either" You're the worst's twitter page pretty much sums it up. You're the Worst perfectly shows that you don't need a Ross and Rachel or a Ted and Robbin. Jimmy and Gretchen's story is far more compelling and easily more relatable as two people who have serious commitment issues and incapable of showing feelings, together they realize that they're perfect for each other. Clever writing, a great ensemble cast makes You're the worst one of the best comedies to come out this year.

2. Penny Dreadful
You came to the wrong neighborhood mother f**er.
Penny Dreadful i guess can be described as The league of extraordinary gentlemen crossed with Fringe. Featuring characters like Victor Frankenstein, Mina Harker and Dorian Grey, the show perfectly utilizes it's ensemble cast, Eva Green stuns with her performance of Vanessa Ives, Josh Hartnett also provides a great performance, Penny Dreadful has the potential to still grow as the show barely even scratched the surface, with many more potential storylines that they can delve into in season 2.  With recognizable characters, top notch performances from the cast, a gloomy, dark and engaging atmosphere Penny Dreadful is one of the best shows that came out this year.

1. Transparent
Oy, Gevalt!
Jeffrey Tambor gives a career defining performance in Transparent, as Mort/Maura a retired professor of political science who finally opens up about being a trans-gender to his family. Everyone can relate to the characters in Transparent, you got the youngest child Ali who is struggling to find her purpose in life, Josh the middle child who struggles with relationships and the oldest Sarah who is having a mid life crisis and ends up having an affair. Even with their flaws, you cant help but still get attached to the characters because they are so real, almost everyone can identify to their problems. Even though the show is tackling some tough issues it manages to be light and humorous. The common element that these year's best shows have is that they have deeply flawed but relatable characters, Transparent is the best example of that element.
